Avios versus Etihad Guest

Two airline co-branded credit cards. Two completely different philosophies. The IndusInd Avios Visa Infinite plays the flexibility game across British Airways, Qatar Airways, and the wider Avios family. The BOBCARD Etihad Guest Premium plays the deep single-airline maximization game with zero forex and instant Gold tier. We dissect every leg, every milestone, every exclusion, every word from the community — across 14 detailed sections.

Three-and-a-half percent versus zero

For every ₹1,00,000 you swipe abroad, the Etihad Premium saves you ₹3,500 in markup vs a typical card. Even versus the Avios card's preferred-destination 1.5%, you save ₹1,500 per lakh — and the Etihad rate applies to every country, not just one zone.

§ IX The Reward Exclusions

Where the cards stop earning

⚠ Critical · read before applying

Every "earn rate" headline ignores what's excluded. The categories below earn zero (or near-zero) rewards. This is where the two cards diverge most dramatically — and where most users get burned by an unread MITC.

IndusInd Avios — graceful exclusions

Most categories still earn, just at a reduced rate. Only fuel earns nothing.

Utilities · 1 Avios per ₹200 Education · 1 Avios per ₹200 Government · 1 Avios per ₹200 Insurance · 1 Avios per ₹200 Fuel · ZERO Avios
The Avios approach is reduce, don't remove. You still rack up some rewards on bills, premiums, and government fees — just at one-third the base rate. Practically: a ₹2,000/month electricity bill still earns 10 Avios.

BOBCARD Etihad — the long blacklist

Entire categories earn nothing. The list is unusually long for a premium card.

Fuel Education fees Hospital expenses Telecom bills Supermarkets Fast-food restaurants Insurance premiums Government transactions Rent payments Wallet loads Charitable donations Personal services Cleaning & maintenance Contractor services Passenger transportation Agricultural payments
A reviewer called this out as "unfair business practice" serious enough to warrant RBI scrutiny. Practically: your BigBasket runs, school fees, doctor's bills, mobile recharge, and rent on this card all earn zero. You are effectively limited to general retail, dining (non-fast-food), travel, and Etihad spends to hit milestones.
§ X Currency Reality Check

Not all miles are created equal

A 6-mile-per-₹100 headline collapses if those miles are worth 50 paise each. Below: the actual per-point value in INR, based on observed redemption sweet spots and award charts circa April 2026.

★ The big takeaway

Avios are typically valued 1.5–2x higher than Etihad Guest Miles per point. So while Etihad's headline 6/₹100 looks better than Avios's 6/₹200, the realised value per ₹100 spent on the co-brand airline is roughly comparable. On general spend, Etihad's 2/₹100 at ~₹0.80/mile ≈ Avios's 3/₹200 at ~₹1.20/mile — they end up neck-and-neck.

§ XI The Calculator

First-year economics on ₹16 lakh spend

Modelled scenario: ₹16,00,000 annual spend split as ₹2L on the co-brand airline, ₹4L on international travel/POS, ₹10L general domestic eligible spend. Welcome offers fully unlocked. Etihad excluded categories not included in the spend mix.

At ₹0.80/EGM realistic value ≈ ₹81,600
Net of fees, factoring in 0% forex savings The Avios card edges ahead at face value (~₹1,08,000 vs ~₹81,600 net of similar fees). But factor the Etihad Premium's 0% forex saving on ₹4L of international spend (~₹14,000 vs Avios's 1.5% best-case ₹6,000 — a delta of ~₹8,000), and the gap narrows. Then factor the annual fee refund on ₹5L spend, and the Etihad card effectively costs ₹0 in year 1 if you cross that threshold. The economics are tighter than headlines suggest.
§ XII From the Forums

What real users are actually saying

IndusInd AviosNegative

Never trust IndusInd. They DO NOT keep their promises. I got the same card after paying ₹40K + taxes in Dec 2024. They neither provided the Qatar gold status and 20K avios … nor did they respond to my multiple complaints.

IndusInd AviosPositive

A 40,000 Avios welcome bonus against a ₹10,000 joining fee is not common in the Indian credit card ecosystem — especially when the currency involved is Avios, with global airline partners and zone-based sweet spots.

IndusInd AviosCaution

The 40K offer is currently on hold per the IndusInd website. They are facing some technical issues, is what I was told when discussed with the RM in Bangalore.

IndusInd AviosPositive

Overall, this is a great promotional offer from Qatar Airways, and it makes a lot of sense to sign up for the IndusInd Bank Avios Visa Infinite credit card during the offer period, provided you have an interest in Avios or oneworld miles.

BOBCARD EtihadCritical

This is a major downside, as this card blocks a huge chunk of everyday spend categories. This is an unfair business practice picked up by banks lately and I feel BOBCard is crossing the line, so much so that I feel like RBI has to step-in.

BOBCARD EtihadFriction

BoB system not approving the application. … Application denied for me as well by default. But later got a call and approved, floater limit. So I assume they're approving now if not before. Otherwise, escalation is the only route.

BOBCARD EtihadPositive

The BOBCARD Etihad Guest Premium Credit Card is a solid airline co-brand card that delivers good value for foreign travellers. The zero forex markup, Gold tier status, lounge access, and milestone bonuses make it worth considering, especially at this fee point with a waiver option.

BOBCARD EtihadPositive

₹50,000 in 60 days — roughly ₹833 a day — is a manageable threshold for most urban professionals who would consider a ₹5,000-fee travel card in the first place.

§ XIII The Call

So, which one?

Pick · IndusInd Avios

For the flexibility seeker

  • You fly Qatar Airways or British Airways multiple times a year (or partners across oneworld).
  • Your international travel concentrates on a single zone — making the 1.5% forex meaningful.
  • You want the option to transfer to Aer Lingus, Iberia, Finnair, or Accor when sweet spots emerge.
  • You spend ₹2L+ a year on utilities/insurance/education and refuse to have those locked out of rewards entirely.
  • International airport meet & greet matters for your travel style.
  • Comprehensive travel insurance and elderly-care concierge are real value to you.
  • You can reliably hit ₹16L/year through the card to extract milestones.
Pick · BOBCARD Etihad

For the Etihad loyalist

  • You fly Etihad regularly — to the UAE, US East Coast (via AUH), or onward to Europe.
  • Your international transactions span multiple countries — the unrestricted 0% forex is the best in market.
  • You spend on etihad.com directly (the 6 EGM/₹100 face rate is genuinely strong).
  • You want easy Etihad Gold tier — priority check-in, extra baggage, lounge invitations on EY metal.
  • You can reach ₹3L/quarter and ₹12L/year for milestones.
  • Your spend pattern avoids the long exclusion list — i.e., you're not paying rent / insurance / telecom / supermarkets on the card.
  • The achievable ₹5L fee waiver appeals — effectively a free card from year 2.

§ XV Final word · the editor's call
April 28, 2026

An honest verdict

The IndusInd Avios card has more soul. Better insurance stack, international Meet & Greet, deeper concierge, the flexibility of a transferable currency, and a low 1.5% forex at one chosen destination. But IndusInd's customer service track record across 2024–26 is genuinely poor — broken promises on Qatar Gold tier, the 40K offer pulled mid-campaign, and benefit non-delivery are recurring in user reports.

The BOBCARD Etihad Premium is the fresher, more disciplined product. Lower joining fee, 0% forex on every international swipe, instant Gold tier, achievable fee waiver, and a Mastercard World Elite badge that belies its modest fee. But the long exclusion list is a serious dent for typical Indian everyday spend, and Etihad miles' ceiling value caps the long-term proposition.

If you're picking one card for the next twelve months and you can fly the partner airline: BOBCARD Etihad Premium edges ahead on raw economics — lower fee, 0% forex unrestricted, instant Gold, achievable milestones, and the fee waiver on ₹5L. If you want a more premium experience and value Avios's flexibility across oneworld, hotels, and partners: IndusInd Avios is the more sophisticated card despite the higher sticker.

★ The pro move

Some serious points-and-miles players hold both — IndusInd Avios for QR/BA-bookable flights and preferred-destination POS spends, and BOBCARD Etihad Premium for all other international transactions (0% forex) and Etihad-specific bookings. Together: ~₹15K in fees buys ~155,000+ travel currency units and the best forex setup in the market.
